Single-Arch Invisalign Treatment: Is it Possible?

No one wants to undergo a dental treatment they don’t need, even if it’s with something as comfortable as Invisalign aligners. So if your misalignment only affects one arch of teeth, it’s only natural to wonder whether it’s possible to only treat that particular arch.

While some patients are able to do this, others require more comprehensive treatment. Ultimately, it will all depend on your unique smile and what your dentist says after your exam.

What Does “Single-Arch Treatment” Mean?

When a dentist is talking about your “arch,” what they mean is your upper or lower set of teeth. A single-arch Invisalign treatment, then, involves using one tray to reposition either your upper or lower pearly whites. Sounds simple enough, right?

What’s tricky about a single-arch Invisalign treatment is that your bite can be easily thrown off. If your upper teeth are perfectly straight while your lower teeth are still crooked, for example, they won’t line up properly when you chew or rest your bite. This can result in eating difficulties, discomfort, or even a TMJ disorder.

Am I A Good Candidate for Single-Arch Invisalign Treatment?

A single-arch Invisalign treatment might be more delicate than you would think, but it is possible. You could be a good candidate as long as:

  • One arch is already straight
  • Your misalignment is minor
  • Your concerns are primarily aesthetic rather than about oral function
  • Your teeth will still come together properly after treatment
  • You’re correcting teeth that were previously straightened

Talk to Your Dentist

Needless to say, it’s difficult to tell how severe (or mild) your dental misalignment is with just a bathroom mirror and your own judgement. The best way to know whether a single-arch Invisalign treatment is right for you is to talk to your dentist. Thanks to their advanced education, they’ll be able to look at an X-ray and give you a professional recommendation. Rest assured that regardless of what they find, they’ll keep you well-informed about your options.
